We exclude over 1400 questionable or harmful ingredients from all of our formulations. As a result, you'll never find ingredients such as parabens, phthalates, synthetic fragrance, oxybenzone, and octinoxate. What we keep out of our products is equally important as what we put into it!

-
How are Classic and Mineral sunscreens different?Classic and Mineral Sunscreens are differentiated by their active sun protection ingredients. Classic sunscreens use chemical (also commonly referred as “non-mineral” or “traditional”) active ingredients designed to absorb and dissipate UVA/UVB rays, while Mineral sunscreens use mineral (also commonly referred to as “physical”) active ingredients such as Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide to scatter and reflect UVA/UVB rays. All of our formulations, both Classic and Mineral, guarantee broad-spectrum protection from both UVA and UVB rays! Those with sensitive skin should try our Mineral formulations!
-
How is COOLA reef-friendly?COOLA products are always reef-friendly. All of our sunscreens adhere to the Hawaii State Legislature Bill guidelines of being considered reef-friendly. We respect and share your love for our planet, so COOLA products are free of the chemical sunscreen actives Oxybenzone and Octonixate, which greatly damage our coral reefs.

What is the difference between COOLA Canada and COOLA USA?As the official distributor of COOLA products in Canada, we are governed by the regulations of Health Canada in terms of SPF ratings, ingredients and claims. You will notice that the COOLA USA website will often have many products that you will not find on our website, and this is because they have been submitted to Health Canada for approvals which is a lengthy process! Some products do not meet the standards of Health Canada (we are one of the strictest in the WORLD!), and as a result are not available for purchase. However, we are confident that we truly have the best of COOLA available in Canada, and we are regularly launching new products as they meet Health Canada guidelines. Be sure to get on our mailing list so you’ll be the first to know when we launch something new! Because skin protective products like COOLA require special designations in Canada, shopping on the USA website for COOLA products is not an option for Canadians. COOLA USA does not ship to Canada. If there is a product you have heard about or want to know more about and it’s not available on our website yet, reach out to us and we’ll give you some great tips on other COOLA products that may compare – maybe we’ll surprise you!
-

Does COOLA use benzene?Benzene is not an ingredient in any COOLA product. Additionally, in the recent report released by Valisure LLC, the COOLA products tested were confirmed NOT to contain benzene. COOLA formulation standards prohibit the use of petroleum-derived ingredients in our formulas, and only allow the use of EU-23 allergen-free naturally-derived fragrances as well as naturally-derived flavors.
-
What is Aluminum Hydroxide? Does COOLA use this ingredient?COOLA uses Alumina/Aluminum Hydroxide as a coating for titanium dioxide, as it prevents it from clumping and allows an even application. This ingredient does not penetrate into the skin, rather it forms as a refractive layer that helps reflect UV rays away from the skin. Alumina/Aluminum Hydroxide is not to be confused with the controversial Aluminum Chlorohydrate or Aluminum Zirconium, which is used in antiperspirant type products and potentially believed to be an endocrine disruptor/cancer causing ingredient. Here at COOLA, we believe the best sunscreen is one that is worn everyday, and therefore chose to create unique formulas in a variety of scents, textures and applications, that are above all safe and effective to use!
-
Do you use alcohol in your products?Alcohol is only in a few products to help with formula delivery. Alcohol is used in only a select few of our products solely when it is required to aid in the delivery of our formula, as it helps oil-based ingredients like sunscreen actives blend with other ingredients. Rest assured! When we do use alcohol, we only use alcohols that are plant-derived and organic!
-
Can I use expired sunscreen? We don't recommend using an expired product. After the printed expiration date, the sunscreen actives will start to lose their effectiveness. This is not to say it is entirely ineffective; however, we can no longer claim the SPF levels listed on the bottle. Because of this, we always recommend using your product before expiration to ensure you are receiving complete SPF protection.
